Man alleges he was fired from store after complaining about penis-shaped party gift

Trader Joe's is being sued by a former employee, who says he was fired for complaining about being given a gift resembling male genitalia during a 2014 Christmas party at one of the grocery chain's Pasadena stores. Paul D. Roberts' Los Angeles Superior Court complaint alleges wrongful termination, sexual harassment, failure to prevent sexual harassment, retaliation and negligence. He is seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages. According to the complaint filed on Tuesday, Roberts was hired as a crew member at the Trader Joe's store on Lake Avenue in February 2007. In December 2014, a company Christmas party gift exchange was held and crew member attendance "was expected and implicitly required," the suit states.

The party occurred on a day Roberts was not scheduled to work, but he says he felt compelled to attend to maintain a good relationship with co- workers and supervisors. After Roberts arrived at the party, co-workers seemed "excited" about his arrival and anxious for him to open his gift, which was given to him by co- worker Armina Asefvasziri, according to his court papers. "Plaintiff opened the wrapped package and was shocked, embarrassed and humiliated to discover that the gift was a small penis with testicles which, when submerged in water, would increase in size," the complaint says. "Mr. Roberts was incredibly distraught in receiving such an obnoxious and offensive item, particularly in front of his supervisor and having received it from a female."
Roberts says he left the party feeling "humiliated and embarrassed." He filed an internal complaint and told supervisors that if he had given a similar gift to a female co-worker, he likely would have been reprimanded or fired, according to his court papers. Roberts felt one of the bosses was nonchalant and did not take him seriously, and claims the same supervisor later interrogated him about false accusations Asefvasziri allegedly made about the plaintiff. Meanwhile, Asefvasziri approached him four days after the party and teased him about his reaction to the gift, according to the suit. A human resources staff member told Roberts in January 2015 that his complaint was being investigated, but he was fired two days later, according to his court papers.
His attorney, William Stoner, said: “The reason given was a pretext for the retaliation. They indicated that his work was unsatisfactory and unacceptable. This is a unique case where you have a man that was being sexually harassed by a woman and then being fired after he complained about it.” said Stoner. In a more typical case, the roles would be reversed. It is no less harmful for the employee to be harassed when it is a man that is being harassed by a woman than in a situation that seems more common. We believe that men as well as women can be victims of sexual harassment in the workplace and this case is an example of that type of situation,” Stoner said. “We are seeking compensation for the loss of what had been his career for eight years,” Stoner said.

Steak thief led police on high-speed chase

Police officers in Texas apprehended a suspect, who is accused of stealing steaks from a store, following a high-speed car chase.

The pursuit began after the suspect allegedly stole steaks from Walmart in Longview shortly after 11am on Wednesday. When police attempted a traffic stop, the suspect fled through two East Texas counties, topping 100 mph, and was finally apprehended by Upshur County deputies.
"It appears that there’s steaks and meats of some sort flying out the windows, and one of them bounced off my patrol car. That’s not something you think of people stealing, especially running from the police in the process. Today was a new one," said East Mountain patrol sergeant Marc Nichols.

Finally stopped, Nichols pulled his gun on the suspect who surrendered without a fight, but Nichols finds nothing funny about the chase, where someone could have been hurt. "There is always the unknown. As he comes up on traffic , we have no idea how they will respond, no way to react until it happens," added Nichols.

Woman arrested after Stormtrooper attack on boyfriend

A Florida woman was arrested after police allegedly witnessed her striking her boyfriend with a Stormtrooper figure.

Leny Alagao, 26, was arrested on April 10 after Port St. Lucie police reported seeing her use the plastic figure to hit her live-in boyfriend. Police were dispatched at about 7:45pm to a “reported disturbance.”

Investigators went to the back of the home and saw Alagao strike her boyfriend with an approximately 2-foot-tall Stormtrooper figure. Police saw a broken glass plate on the ground and “disarray inside the bedroom.”
Alagao said she was mad at her boyfriend, but didn’t mean to hit him. The boyfriend said he didn’t want to press charges. Alagao, of Port St. Lucie, was arrested on a battery charge. She was taken to the St. Lucie County Jail.

Naked man accused of breaking into home and destroying $50,000 worth of property

A naked man from Rochester Hills, Michigan, allegedly caused about $50,000 damage to a Bloomfield Township home before police interrupted his rampage earlier this month, authorities said. Bloomfield Township police were dispatched to a home at 3pm on April 10, according to a report released on Thursday. Inside, they found Daniel Elliot, 53, a former family member who had allegedly broken into the home while the family were on vacation.
“Furniture was turned over and damaged, china was smashed, doors were broken, and several faucets were broke, causing the rooms to flood,” Bloomfield Township Police Det. Sgt.John Weise said. Weise said the amount of damage suggested Elliot had been in the home for a “significant amount of time.”
The $50,000 damage figure is a “rough estimate,” he said. Weise didn’t speculate about why Elliot had taken off his clothes. Elliot was arrested at the scene. He was arraigned on Wednesday on charges of second-degree home invasion and malicious destruction of property. He remains in the Oakland County Jail on $50,000 bond.

A Florida man is accused of stalking his ex-girlfriend and humping a stop sign in front of her home, police say.

David Smith, 58, of St. Petersburg, is facing stalking charges. According to police, on the nights of April 10-13 Smith walked on foot to the victim's home and dumped trash before walking off.

Police say on the night of April 13 an officer witnessed Smith dumping the trash. The incident were also recorded on camera at the victim's residence, an arrest affidavit states.
Police say earlier in the day a witness saw Davis start humping a stop sign in front of the woman's home while pointing at the woman's home and laughing.
