Dying vet’s ‘fuck you’ letter to the shrub & Dick Cheney needs to be read by every American

To: George W. Bush and Dick Cheney
From: Tomas Young
I write this letter on the 10th anniversary of the Iraq War on behalf of my fellow Iraq War veterans. I write this letter on behalf of the 4,488 soldiers and Marines who died in Iraq. I write this letter on behalf of the hundreds of thousands of veterans who have been wounded and on behalf of those whose wounds, physical and psychological, have destroyed their lives. I am one of those gravely wounded. I was paralyzed in an insurgent ambush in 2004 in Sadr City. My life is coming to an end. I am living under hospice care.
I write this letter on behalf of husbands and wives who have lost spouses, on behalf of children who have lost a parent, on behalf of the fathers and mothers who have lost sons and daughters and on behalf of those who care for the many thousands of my fellow veterans who have brain injuries. I write this letter on behalf of those veterans whose trauma and self-revulsion for what they have witnessed, endured and done in Iraq have led to suicide and on behalf of the active-duty soldiers and Marines who commit, on average, a suicide a day. I write this letter on behalf of the some 1 million Iraqi dead and on behalf of the countless Iraqi wounded. I write this letter on behalf of us all—the human detritus your war has left behind, those who will spend their lives in unending pain and grief.
I write this letter, my last letter, to you, Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney. I write not because I think you grasp the terrible human and moral consequences of your lies, manipulation and thirst for wealth and power. I write this letter because, before my own death, I want to make it clear that I, and hundreds of thousands of my fellow veterans, along with millions of my fellow citizens, along with hundreds of millions more in Iraq and the Middle East, know fully who you are and what you have done. You may evade justice but in our eyes you are each guilty of egregious war crimes, of plunder and, finally, of murder, including the murder of thousands of young Americans—my fellow veterans—whose future you stole.
Your positions of authority, your millions of dollars of personal wealth, your public relations consultants, your privilege and your power cannot mask the hollowness of your character. You sent us to fight and die in Iraq after you, Mr. Cheney, dodged the draft in Vietnam, and you, Mr. Bush, went AWOL from your National Guard unit. Your cowardice and selfishness were established decades ago. You were not willing to risk yourselves for our nation but you sent hundreds of thousands of young men and women to be sacrificed in a senseless war with no more thought than it takes to put out the garbage.
I joined the Army two days after the 9/11 attacks. I joined the Army because our country had been attacked. I wanted to strike back at those who had killed some 3,000 of my fellow citizens. I did not join the Army to go to Iraq, a country that had no part in the September 2001 attacks and did not pose a threat to its neighbors, much less to the United States. I did not join the Army to “liberate” Iraqis or to shut down mythical weapons-of-mass-destruction facilities or to implant what you cynically called “democracy” in Baghdad and the Middle East. I did not join the Army to rebuild Iraq, which at the time you told us could be paid for by Iraq’s oil revenues. Instead, this war has cost the United States over $3 trillion. I especially did not join the Army to carry out pre-emptive war. Pre-emptive war is illegal under international law. And as a soldier in Iraq I was, I now know, abetting your idiocy and your crimes. The Iraq War is the largest strategic blunder in U.S. history. It obliterated the balance of power in the Middle East. It installed a corrupt and brutal pro-Iranian government in Baghdad, one cemented in power through the use of torture, death squads and terror. And it has left Iran as the dominant force in the region. On every level—moral, strategic, military and economic—Iraq was a failure. And it was you, Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney, who started this war. It is you who should pay the consequences.
I would not be writing this letter if I had been wounded fighting in Afghanistan against those forces that carried out the attacks of 9/11. Had I been wounded there I would still be miserable because of my physical deterioration and imminent death, but I would at least have the comfort of knowing that my injuries were a consequence of my own decision to defend the country I love. I would not have to lie in my bed, my body filled with painkillers, my life ebbing away, and deal with the fact that hundreds of thousands of human beings, including children, including myself, were sacrificed by you for little more than the greed of oil companies, for your alliance with the oil sheiks in Saudi Arabia, and your insane visions of empire.
I have, like many other disabled veterans, suffered from the inadequate and often inept care provided by the Veterans Administration. I have, like many other disabled veterans, come to realize that our mental and physical wounds are of no interest to you, perhaps of no interest to any politician. We were used. We were betrayed. And we have been abandoned. You, Mr. Bush, make much pretense of being a Christian. But isn’t lying a sin? Isn’t murder a sin? Aren’t theft and selfish ambition sins? I am not a Christian. But I believe in the Christian ideal. I believe that what you do to the least of your brothers you finally do to yourself, to your own soul.
My day of reckoning is upon me. Yours will come. I hope you will be put on trial. But mostly I hope, for your sakes, that you find the moral courage to face what you have done to me and to many, many others who deserved to live. I hope that before your time on earth ends, as mine is now ending, you will find the strength of character to stand before the American public and the world, and in particular the Iraqi people, and beg for forgiveness.

President and First Lady Obama Want Their Daughters To Try a Minimum Wage Job

obama-family
President and Mrs. Obama are looking to pass along middle class values to their daughters by wanting them to try working a minimum wage job.
Transcript from Parade Magazine:
Is this about your daughters also, and their future?
PO: Absolutely. Every little girl I meet out there, I think about Malia and Sasha, and the notion that they’d be treated differently, trapped, not paid enough, having to settle for a raw deal on the job, having to scramble between taking care of kids, taking care of an aging parent, being single moms like my mom was and going to school and work at the same time, then having to come home and cook.
“Families happen because you have a society that is supportive of families,” says the president (with Mrs. Obama and Sasha, left, and Malia, right, in 2004). (Courtesy of Obama for America)
Do you want your daughters to work in the types of character-building minimum-wage jobs you had?
MO: Oh, yeah. I think every kid needs to get a taste of what it’s like to do that real hard work.
PO: We are looking for opportunities for them to feel as if going to work and getting a paycheck is not always fun, not always stimulating, not always fair. But that’s what most folks go through every single day.
MO: That’s what life is.
One of the main reasons that this president was reelected was that he understood the problems of regular people who are trying to go work and make ends meet. It is admirable that the President and First Lady are trying to pass that understanding on to their daughters.
Contrary to what repugicans believe, this country isn’t about the one percent at the top, or the makers versus the takers. What drives this country are the millions of folks who get out of bed everyday go to work, work hard, and try to do right by their own families. A lot of those hard working people have fallen behind because wages have not kept up with prices, and many families have not recovered from the Great Recession.
It would be easy to take the repugican view, and argue that we as a society aren’t responsible for those who have fallen behind, but those same people who repugicans dismiss with a shrug are the engine that drives the economy. No one is entitled to success, but this country is based on the notion of opportunity and a fair chance.
Democrats have become the only party fighting to protect opportunity, and the Obamas are trying to show their daughters why this fight is so important.

After Taking Down Scott Walker Prosecutors Are Closing In On Chris Christie

christie-walker
A bad time for Republicans just got worse. First, prosecutors in Wisconsin accused repugican Scott Walker of running a criminal enterprise, while in New Jersey federal prosecutors are closing in on repugican Chris Christie.
According to Esquire:
Whatever Christie says or does — and whatever potential donors or Jimmy Fallon and his viewers think — the question that truly matters is whether Fishman’s pursuit leads to the governor himself. Christie’s Port appointees — not only Samson, but former PA Deputy Executive Director Bill Baroni and his oddball sidekick David Wildstein — all face near-certain indictment and are being pressed to hand up Christie, as is the governor’s former chief counsel, Charlie McKenna.
Wildstein, portrayed as the mastermind behind Ft. Lee’s traffic problems, has made proffers to Fishman’s investigators — hoping to trade information to the prosecutor in exchange for gentler legal treatment — but Fishman has cut no deals with anyone so far, and the looming indictments have encouraged Christie’s PA appointees to sing. “Don’t underestimate what Wildstein has on Christie,” says one source. “And Wildstein and Baroni have both turned on Samson. If Samson doesn’t give Fishman Christie, Samson is toast.”
The Christie and Walker investigations have followed the same textbook format. Prosecutors in both Wisconsin and New Jersey are systematically picking off the aides and others with knowledge surrounding the repugican governors in order to get to the big fish. Rumors and stories about abuse of power and corruption has been swirling about Walker and Christie for years, so it isn’t a shock that both have prosecutors hot on their tails.
Less than a year ago, the repugican cabal was touting Rick Snyder (r-MI), John Kasich (r-OH), Rick Scott (r-FL), Chris Christie (r-NJ), and Tom Corbett (r-PA) as the future of the repugican cabal. Corbett looks like a dead man walking. Scott is fighting to hang on to his seat while Christie and Walker may be lucky to avoid prison. The only two governors left standing out of the next “repugican wave” are Kasich, who changed his tone after a humiliating public defeat on a union busting bill, and Snyder.
The thing that both Walker and Christie have in common is that they are Koch boys. It is no secret that they both belong to the wingnut billionaires. There have always been corrupt politicians, but it is fair to ask what if any role the unregulated campaign contributions that were unleashed by the Citizens United ruling are playing in this wave of scandal?
Thanks to unlimited contributions from the Koch brothers and other billionaires, there is no cabal structure to keep governors like Christie and Walker in check. Elected repugicans are able to raise their own funds and build their own empires. They have built their own kingdoms, so it isn’t surprising when they act like the law doesn’t apply to them. Walker is accused of running a criminal scheme that violated campaign finance laws, while questions have been raised about Bridgegate and Christie’s handling of Sandy relief funds.
Both Scott Walker and Chris Christie are more likely to find themselves in the big house than the White House after 2016.

CNN Intentionally Avoids the Truth About the tea party and the repugican cabal

CNN doesn't want to deal with the undeniable connection between the repugican cabal, tea party, Faux News, and elements of the neo-Nazi movement.…
SNN-Fail
Sometimes people take a trip to the dark side, recognize it for what it is and find their way back. In many respects they are our best educators because not only do they know the ins and outs of the dark side, they understand who it appeals to and why.
Frank Meeink is someone who has been to the dark side of neo-Nazism.  Recruited as a teenager, Meeink became one of the faces of the movement, appearing on programs like Nightline.  He found his way out of that world.
Following the Las Vegas shooting spree, CNN approached Meeink for an interview – as he put it because they reach out to him when something bad happens.
During an interview with David Pakman, Frank Meeink talked about the links between the tea party, Cliven Bundy, neo-Nazis, Faux and the Las Vegas shooting spree.  The story of that interview was Meeink’s claim that CNN didn’t want him to talk about the connections between these factions of the lunatic fringe. Just keep it to a discussion about the wingnut’s belief that the Federal government is out to get white people, don’t mention the relationships among the fringe, Faux and the repugican cabal.
Ultimately, CNN decided against the interview with Meeink for reasons that may or may not be related to the fact that he connected all the dots between the most extreme lunatic fringe factions in existence with the “mainstream” repugican cabal and Faux news.  Moreover, he was willing to say so.  Maybe they didn’t want to risk Meeink breaking some of the taboos within corporate news and within our current political discourse.
Meeink claims that CNN didn’t want him to discuss links and overlaps between the repugican cabal, tea party, Faux News, and elements of the neo-Nazi movement.  Yet, Meeink because of his background is in a unique position to expose the ugly truth and he has the desire to do so. He begins talking about the tea party’s recruitment of people he knew in the neo-Nazi movement during the first minute of David Pakman’s interview.

Meeink points to the tea party’s willingness to back neo-Nazis as long as they “tone down” the anti-semitism.  He points to the people he knew while he was a neo-Nazi who are now part of the tea party, posting pro tea party articles on their face book pages and in some cases, running for political office under the tea party banner.
This means that tea party ideology is a full embrace of neo-Nazi ideology.  It means that there is enough within the tea party’s ideology to attract the skinhead crowd.
The ties are undeniable and they exist because there is an overlap between the tea party’s ideology and beliefs to which white nativists subscribe.  As Meeink explained during his interview with David Pakman, the “race war” that he once believed in is not of the classic white on any and all other races variety.  It’s about connecting the Federal government, allegedly controlled by Jews, with a desire to improve the lives of African-Americans and Hispanics at the expense of white people.  In application, this is why the tea party identified with Cliven Bundy.  They distanced themselves from Bundy when he expressed his views about black people because he was being too honest, just as CNN was uncomfortable with Meeink’s statements connecting the various lunatic fringe factions with Faux and the “mainstream” repugican cabal.
The common link between neo-Nazis and the tea party lies in the belief that the Federal government is “evil” because it’s coming after your guns, your jobs, your economic opportunities. By logical extension, the tea party talks about an imaginary war on the religio-wingnut’s cherry picked version of christianity.  As Meeink’s autobiography explains, the nexus between religion and wingnut ideology was part of an indoctrination process he endured during his earliest days with the skinheads.
It’s also a common element in the tea party’s rhetoric which equates good christianity with its ideology and a deliberate effort to demonize anyone who doesn’t subscribe to their ideology.
Again, while this is a common element and possibly a factor in what attracts skinheads to the tea party, this is not to say that tea party fascism is a full embrace of the skinhead variety.
Meink claimed that CNN went to lengths to convey that he shouldn’t comment on the overlap between the lunatic fringe with the repugican cabal and Faux news during an interview, for reasons that we can only speculate about.  Of course, they have that choice.  But the fact remains, the relationship between the lunatic fringe and the establishment wingnuts is a subject that, generally, the corporate media prefers to avoid discussing. In the end this amounts to denying their viewers information about the ties between the tea party wing of the repugican cabal, Faux and people who have dangerous views about race and about the Federal government.
These people are also upping the anti with increasingly violent actions that occur more frequently with the rhetoric to match. It’s too dangerous to close our eyes to these connections because they make us uncomfortable.

Faux News Gets Busted for Falsely Claiming that Obama Released the ‘New Bin Laden’

PunditFact busted Faux News’ Jeanine Pirro with a big old “false” for claiming that ISIS leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi was “released by Obama in 2009.”
judge jeanineOn June 14, failed repugican candidate for New York Attorney General in 2006 and now legal analyst and host of Faux’s Justice with Judge Jeanine, Jeanine Pirro blamed Barack Obama for the “New Bin Laden Terrorizing Iraq”, saying he was released by Obama in 2009. Pirro warned her audience in pure repugican fear-mongering style, “Yes indeed, you need to be worried.”
Since this is Faux News, you know where this is going. That’s right: This claim is false.
The “New Bin Laden” was actually released under the shrub in 2004 according to the Defense Department. But even if he had been released under Obama, the U.S.-Iraq agreement behind the release took place during the shrub junta.
As Iraq is being overrun by ISIS – a brutal radical group deemed even by Al Qaeda to be too militant – Faux News host Jeanine Pirro blamed Barack Obama’s feckless foreign policy during the opening segment of Justice with Judge Jeanine Saturday.
The head of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was released by Obama in 2009. As he was leaving Camp Bucca in Iraq, al-Baghdadi warned his American captors: “I’ll see you in New York.”
Judge Jeanine warned America: “Yes indeed, you need to be worried.” The question is, are we listening?
And the facts per PolitiFact’s PunditFact:
Pirro said that Obama released the current head of ISIS from government custody in 2009. The Defense Department said that the man now known as Baghdadi was released in 2004. The evidence that Baghdadi was still in custody in 2009 appears to be the recollection of an Army colonel who said Baghdadi’s “face is very familiar.”
Even if the colonel is right, Baghdadi was not set free; he was handed over to the Iraqis who released him some time later. But more important, the legal contract between the United States and Iraq that guaranteed that the United States would give up custody of virtually every detainee was signed during the shrub junta. It would have required an extraordinary effort to have held on to Baghdadi and there is no evidence that he was on anyone’s radar screen, assuming that he was in custody at all in 2009.
The U.S.-Iraq agreement drove the release of thousands of detainees in 2009, but Obama had nothing to do with that.
We rate the claim False.
So, the people who backed the junta who lied us into invading Iraq and then later, when they failed to get Bin Laden, told us he wasn’t that important, are blaming the President who did get Osama Bin Laden for a release that the DOD (who know more about this than Judge Jeanine) claims took place under the shrub.
What you’re seeing here is the result of many years of steadfast commitment to denial, topped off with several recent failed attempts to successfully launch their latest Benghazi conspiracy theory. So now the right is at that point in their program where they blindly point fingers at Obama and scream like children who ate too much sugar.
The truth of the matter is that the shrub’s foreign policy was a complete fail. Instead of admitting it and dealing with it, repugicans have spent years trying to toss the blame ball at Obama. Even as they try to blame the current situation in Iraq on Obama, they are denying that Obama said from the beginning that we should not invade Iraq. Our invasion created power vacuums and chaos from which there was no easy and best out. Blaming this President for the fallout of the bad decisions of their pretender seems to be The Only repugican Position. Gone are the days of honest policy debates and differences in ideology — the modern repugican cabal refuses to acknowledge reality.
Obama didn’t release the “New Bin Laden”. That was the shrub. Again. So, if you’re keeping track, that’s two Bin Laden fails for the shrub and two Bin Laden wins for Obama.
The repugicans will do anything to avoid admitting another foreign policy success for this President — even blaming him for their own pretender’s actions.

Deadbeat Dad tea party repugican Joe Walsh Is Mad That Radio Station Won’t Let Him Say The N-Word

Joe-Walsh2

During the broadcast of his AM talk radio show Thursday evening, former one-term repugican congressman Joe Walsh live-tweeted that he was being censored by his radio station from having an “honest conversation” about racial slurs. Walsh felt that the station was practicing a double standard by allowing him to use the term ‘redskin’ when discussing the ongoing controversy over the name of Washington’s NFL franchise, but would not let him use his airtime to say other racial slurs, particularly the N-word.
Apparently, Walsh persisted in trying to use other racial slurs on-air, even after the general manager told him the words were verboten and to cease his attempts. Walsh then claimed his show was pulled off the air early and he was sent home. His status as of Thursday night was uncertain, but he tweeted that he should know something by 5 PM Friday, when his show next airs.

Where should we begin? First off, we already know that Walsh is going to claim he had his 1st Amendment rights trampled on by the radio station’s management. He tweeted that he was censored. It always seems like tea party-types, a la Sarah Palin, claim that their free speech is being taken away whenever someone is criticized over their words, or somebody gets a TV show or radio gig canceled for saying something dumb and/or offensive. Here’s the deal. Walsh can say whatever he wants without fear of reprisal from the federal government, as long as he is not issuing a direct threat at somebody. However, that freedom doesn’t provide him the right to be given a forum to speak. He has the freedom to say what he wants, but his speech is not free from consequences.
Another thing — what is it with wingnuts and their specific desire to say the N-word? Not only that, but say it without anyone getting offended? It seems like there is just this insatiable appetite with certain wingnuts that can’t be tempered until they can spout off racial slurs willy nilly in front of minorities without the fear of retaliation. Recently, we saw Glenn Beck and a wingnut ‘artist’ bemoan the fact that they can’t get away with saying the N-word or homophobic slurs, blaming it all on political correctness and the “thought police.”
Finally, there is the whole false equivalency thing with Walsh’s argument. Like it or not, the name of Washington’s football team is the Redskins. While the term is offensive and the team should change its name, you aren’t going to see the level of discomfort or anger by saying ‘redskin’ right now, especially since their is an ongoing debate on the use and appropriateness of it. To just make a blanket proclamation that because you can get away with saying one slur due to the special circumstances surrounding it, you should then be able to say any other slur without consequence, is taking obtuseness to a whole other level.
Then again, we aren’t really dealing with someone who is known for subtlety of thought, empathy towards minorities or taking responsibility for his own actions. This is a man who squelched on his child support while he was in Congress. Then, after being soundly defeated by Tammy Duckworth in 2012, he tried to get the court to lower his child support payments because he was “unemployed through no fault of his own.” One of the big reasons Walsh was defeated in 2012, besides the revelations he was a deadbeat dad, was his claim that Duckworth, who lost both her legs serving in Iraq, isn’t a true war hero.
Since leaving office, Walsh has continued to make moronic and offensive statements, possibly to gain attention, but also just as likely because he doesn’t know any better. After the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, Walsh said that all young Muslim men needed to be racially profiled. A month prior to that, he said that Americans are stupid and lazy and Democrats just want to keep blacks and Latinos dependent on the government so as to keep them “on the government plantation.”
It seems like a very real possibility that Walsh will be fired. However, with his track record, one has to wonder why the radio station hired him in the first place.

Religio-wingnut ‘christians’ Show No Class By Placing Obama Figurines In Urinals At Coven

This week in Washington, DC, the Freedom and Faith cabal is holding their Road to Majority coven. Basically, this is a chance for religio-wingut christians to get together and discuss policy fantasies as well as electoral theft strategy for 2014. This also happens to create an opportunity for repugicans from around the country to pander to the religio-winguts in the hopes of gaining their support and approval ahead of the 2014 midterms and perhaps the 2016 Presidential election. Therefore, besides the usual suspects scheduled for an event like this, we also saw the likes of Chris Christie and Rand Paul (r-KY) placed on the guest speaker list.
As one can only imagine, President Obama has not been well-received throughout the summit. Pretty much all of the speakers that appeared Thursday and Friday devoted large portions of their speeches criticizing the President and his policies. Rafael Cruz, the father of  Ted Cruz (r-TX), during a speech where he pitched Dominionism to the crowd, exclaimed “Stop voting for the village idiot!” Ralph Reed, who heads the Faith and Freedom cabal, wants the American people to burn the IRS offices to the ground. Gary Bauer used his time at the podium to claim that President Obama will bring down America because he is obsessed with gay issues, which shows a stunning lack of self-awareness as Bauer has been publicly railing against homosexuality since the Reagan years.
With a large group of religio-wingnut christians gathered in a large hotel and whipped into an ideological frenzy over their mutual hatred of all things Obama, perhaps we shouldn’t have been surprised by the following action:

The Huffington Post sent Igor Bobic and Sam Stein to cover the event. Bobic discovered the figurine placed in the urinal. It was obviously done as a way to show total disrespect towards the President while being willfully offensive. Even the figurine itself appears to be a caricature of the President with at least a hint of stereotypically racial overtones.

As you can see, this is basically just another situation where repugicans get together, trash the President, say mildly to extremely offensive things and prove to sane people that they are really not serious about, well, pretty much anything. At least when it comes to finding solutions to real world problems.

Remember the Bus Driver Whose bible Stopped the Bullets of 3 Black Teens?

Well…He Lied
It was a hell of a story! Dayton, Ohio RTA bus driver Rickey Wagoner told police he was attacked by 3 black teenagers wearing hoodies after his trolley broke down in the early morning of February 24th. They stabbed him, they shot him…and as FreakOutNation reports, Wagoner said that “two of the bullets struck a copy of ‘The message,’ a modern-day take on the new testament, that the driver had stuffed into a chest pocket. It’s a miracle!”
And oh how the mainstream media just ate this good christian story UP! All the major news networks fell over themselves to tell the world about the miracle of the hard working white Christian who faced certain death at the hands of the evil black man, but god intervened, saving Wagoner WITH HIS OWN DIVINE WRITTEN WORD!
Turns out Rickey Wagoner is just another racist bible-thumping sociopath. Yup, he lied, not about some of the story, but about ALL of the story. There were no black teens attacking him. In fact, he shot and stabbed himself. Seems the only thing that was true was that his trolley broke down. As The Dayton Daily News reports, RTA Executive Director Mark Donaghy had this to say:
After conducting a comprehensive investigation that has spanned nearly four months, the police department has concluded Mr. Wagoner fabricated his statements. All of us at RTA are angry at the thought that an employee would allegedly mislead the police, the public and us and use ugly racial stereotypes in doing so.
Police were suspicious from the start, when the 320 pound Wagoner claimed he had fought the teens ferociously, and had run several hundred feet, and yet was not at all out of breath when officers arrived on the scene. So not only is he a racist pig that hides behind his “delusion,” he’s also an idiot.

A modern-day Amelia Earheart (that's her name) launches 'round the world flight

161199191
In The Magazine, writer Liana Aghajanian has a feature on the Amelia Rose Earhart—yep, that's her name—who plans to fly across the world next week, like the famous aviator after whom she was named.
Snip:
Amelia Rose Earhart’s family always told her she was distantly related to Amelia Mary Earhart, the aviation and women’s rights pioneer who disappeared during a journey around the world. Speculation about precisely what happened persists. Expeditions are still organized to find her plane, and teams have claimed to have found its remnants.
Now, Amelia Rose is sitting in a nearly pitch-black garage, just a year before she planned to embark on her own round-the-world flight following the same route as her name-alike, something she announced at the aviation world’s premier event, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in Wisconsin. She spends so long in the garage with her tears and her shoes that the small motion light fails to sense anyone in the enclosed space. The light goes off.
In many ways it feels as if the light is going out on her life too. Has she built her budding aviation career on a misunderstanding, a genealogical error, a falsehood she had believed to be real? How was she supposed to continue with this flight, continue with her job as “Denver’s own Amelia Earhart.”

For many people, however, the only time they will encounter a Manta ray is in an aquarium. It is then that the inquisitive rays will show their faces, as it were. The result is quite extraordinary.
